It is easy to be discouraged and believe that nothing changes, and yet if we pay attention, we see different developments that mark a shift in consciousness and behavior. A recent sign is the article in the Financial Times today, reporting that a major US pension fund is considering selling its holdings in some of the largest oil and gas companies because of the threat posed by climate change. This is shareholder activistm at work. And this reinforces Obama’s call for a response to the climate challenge in his inaugural speech; he termed this a responsibility to posterity.
However, this is not just a matter of the selling of shares or policy declaration. This has ramifications for all of us. What does it mean in terms of how we consume, how we move about, how we live? These are transformational times at various levels. We all need to ponder on this.
